One of the hardest things to understand in growing up

Life is not about polars.

It isn’t male or female, gay or straight, right or wrong, sad or happy, pessimist or optimist.

We can be multiple things. It’s sort of paradoxical that we can be everything that is opposite, but the truth of the matter is is that these are just words to describe us. Words that don’t fully capture everything we are and feel. We are captured by the bounds of our language to understand our feelings, but it’s more than that. Our very being transcends the levels of language.

As an English speaker I am not aware of a word that describes someone as both sad and happy. We have scores of words for happy and scores of words for sad, but we don’t have many that involve both. Neutral cannot capture the essence that is being both sad and happy, but the lack thereof. I think it’s unfair to claim that we can only have one feeling at a time. Language still has a long way to develop because, as it turns out, we’re complicated, and that’s just the easy way to describe it.
